Italian Couple Leave Five Children Home Alone During Vacation

An Italian couple's holiday in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh turned into an unusual incident that caught the attention of authorities after it was discovered they had left their five children home alone. According to Italian media, the teacher of one of the children felt concerned without needing an official report. The photos the couple posted on social media throughout their vacation were enough to raise her suspicions that the children were left unsupervised, prompting her to immediately alert the authorities. It appears that one of the children revealed the situation at home to their teacher. Subsequently, the youth services authority, along with the police, moved towards the family's apartment in the northern Italian city of Trieste, according to the Italian news agency ANSA. As soon as the officials entered the apartment, their suspicions were confirmed. It turned out that five children, aged between 8 and 17, were managing the household themselves, along with several pets. The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that the children spent about four days alone, but they did not neglect their daily routine, continuing to go to school without missing a single day. The authorities eventually intervened, removing the five children from the home and placing them together in a care institution. The parents were informed of the situation, with the opportunity to visit their children. According to reports, custody has not been revoked from the parents yet, but their fitness as parents is now under evaluation. Authorities stated this is part of an effort to "create the conditions for the family to be reunited as soon as possible".
