Global Agreement Reached on Environmental Funding

Countries reached a crucial agreement in Rome to fund environmental conservation efforts, aiming for $200 billion annually by 2030 to protect nature and biodiversity.

Global Agreement Reached on Environmental Funding

Long negotiations in Rome have concluded successfully: countries of the world have reached an agreement on financing the preservation of biodiversity. This will help avoid a recurrence of the protracted negotiations that took place in Colombia four months ago. On the final day of the 16th conference (Conference on Biological Diversity) of the countries, both rich and poor, made mutual concessions and reached an agreement on financing the protection of nature until 2030.

After adopting the decision, the delegates remained, applauded, and were pleased with the achievement of the agreement in the last moments after the last day of negotiations, which took place in Rome at the FAO headquarters. The chair of the 16th Columbia part of the Union, Mohamad, said: "We applaud all of you... You did an amazing job."

Countries express concern about the fragmentation of aid in the field of development, exacerbated due to financial crises and the departure of Americans from supporting these efforts with Donald Trump’s return to power. The presidency of the conference, which proposed a reform plan of different systems aimed at financing nature protection until 2030, also published a document, the purpose of which is to improve the activities of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the Global Biodiversity Fund (GBF), created in the current decision in 2022.

Countries need to raise billions of dollars in order to prevent deforestation, overexploitation of resources, and pollution by 2030, which threatens biodiversity, climate, and the preservation of millions of species under threat of extinction. Together with this objective, defined in 2022 within the framework of the Kunming-Montreal agreement, a plan of action for 2030, including 23 targets that need to be achieved, has been developed.
