Aurelio De Laurentis, owner of Italian club Napoli, current Serie A champions, has proposed radical changes to football laws to maintain the game's appeal for the new generation. De Laurentis, whose team currently sits in second place, nine points behind leaders Inter Milan, said in a media statement: "If I were in the shoes of the game's officials, I would first suggest reducing match time from 90 to 50 minutes, with 25 minutes per half, without added time, and strictly penalizing any player who intentionally wastes time by staying on the field." He added: "I also propose abolishing yellow and red cards and replacing them with a system similar to rugby, where a player is excluded for 5 minutes in case of a minor foul and 20 minutes for a major one." De Laurentis went on to say that modifying the offside law would be a crucial step to enhance the game's attacking nature, explaining: "The new generation loves watching goals, but current offside restrictions diminish that. We must encourage scoring more goals, as the current spectacle is no longer exciting enough." He concluded his remarks by warning about losing the fan base in the future, saying: "The young generation is our treasure. If we don't offer them what satisfies them, we will lose the engagement that the sport has maintained for over 100 years." A goal cannot be disallowed over millimeters.
