An 81-year-old man was killed on Tuesday morning after being struck by a car driven by Inter's second goalkeeper, Spanish keeper Jose Martinez, according to Italian media reports.
According to ANSA agency, the accident occurred at around 9:40 AM local time in the town of Vignone, located in the province of Como, near Inter's training center in Appiano Gentile.
The man's death was announced at the scene, despite the rapid arrival of an ambulance and a medical helicopter.
Italian police are conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident. The initial hypothesis, reported by the newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, suggests that the elderly man may have suffered a sudden health issue, causing him to swerve into the path of Martinez's car.
The Inter goalkeeper immediately stopped and administered first aid to the man.
Following this tragic incident, Inter club has cancelled the press conference for their Romanian coach, Christian Chivu, which was scheduled for Tuesday.
Martinez (27 years old) joined the European runners-up last summer and has played 12 matches this season for the 'Nerazzurri', who rely on Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer as their first-choice keeper.
