At the Climate Summit (COP29) held in Baku, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized the importance of addressing climate change in a realistic and pragmatic manner. In her speech, she highlighted that there is currently no alternative to fossil fuels and proposed nuclear energy as a viable option in the transition process toward cleaner energies.
"It is up to us to determine whether the fight against climate change will be a success or a failure," stated the leader, pointing out the responsibility we have to future generations. Additionally, she underscored the need to utilize diverse energy sources, including biofuels and nuclear fusion, to achieve a balance in the transition toward a more sustainable energy model.
Meloni stressed Italy's commitment to research in nuclear fusion and mentioned that the country has been a pioneer in this field, even though it currently does not have operating nuclear plants. In this regard, she emphasized the importance of ensuring decarbonization without compromising the production and sustainability of the Italian productive and social system.
Moreover, the Italian Prime Minister highlighted international cooperation as key to achieving the ambitious climate goals set at previous summits. She emphasized the importance of technological neutrality and adequate financial support to ensure the effectiveness of climate change initiatives, with shared responsibilities among developed and emerging countries.
In this sense, Italy has allocated a significant portion of its budget for initiatives in Africa and has reaffirmed its support for key funds such as the Green Climate Fund and the Loss and Damage Fund. Meloni concluded her remarks by emphasizing the need for a balanced and pragmatic approach to addressing climate change, betting on energy diversification and international cooperation as fundamental pillars in this global fight.
