The content of a newly released series on Disney Plus has sparked controversy by negatively portraying the residents of Aventrana. The city's mayor, Antonio Lazzi, has expressed concern that the name of the city is associated with an image of ignorance and backwardness due to the show's focus.
The plot of the series centers on the murder of a 15-year-old girl named Sarah Scazzi in the municipality of Taranto in 2010. This case is known for the impact of the victim's mother finding out about her daughter's death through a television program.
However, the criticisms are not directed at the treatment of the case itself or the people involved but at the town where the story takes place. The Aventrana city council filed a complaint against Disney Plus alleging defamation, just two days before the premiere of the series titled "Aventrana - This is Not Hollywood."
Local authorities argue that the series discredits the image of the city by addressing a specific criminal topic without considering the implications for the community. Those responsible for the murder, the victim's aunt Cosima Serrano and her cousin Sabrina Misseri, received life sentences, while the implicated uncle was recently released from prison after being convicted of helping to hide the body.
The case of Sarah Scazzi moved Italy and the entire world, and now Aventrana is embroiled in a global controversy due to the perception generated by this series.
