Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, revealed on Wednesday in Washington that his country's security services have managed to thwart a Russian-backed cyberattack targeting diplomatic headquarters and portals linked to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. "We anticipated a hacker attack against a series of Foreign Ministry embassies, starting with the one in Washington, and also against some Milan-Cortina sites, including the hotels in the town of Cortina," explained the head of Italian diplomacy before participating in a summit on critical minerals in the U.S. capital. Italy is hosting the 25th Winter Olympic Games from February 6 to 22, with the presence of athletes from 93 countries around the world. "We anticipated the attack because the action was being prepared; cybersecurity is fundamental and I am very satisfied with this work," Tajani reiterated, who explicitly confirmed that the authorship of the incursions belongs to "Russian hackers". The Deputy Prime Minister attributed the success of the operation to the recent structural reform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the creation of a new Directorate General for Security.
