Clash of Views: Italian Women on Meloni's Policies

Elly Schlein, leader of Italy's opposition Democratic Party and a prominent critic of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's policies on women's issues, stated in a recent TV interview that cuts to social care and schools place a heavy burden on families, and thus primarily on women. However, not all women share this view. Beatrice Costa, who feels happy under Meloni's government, said: 'I feel as if I have been given permission to be a mother.' She added that the pressure to prioritize a career before having children was immense. On the other hand, Arianna Ricci, who worked for Meloni's party, expressed disappointment, stating she sees no incentive to start a family while on a temporary contract. The tragic murder of model and entrepreneur Pamela Ginieri, killed by her partner, highlights the growing issue of violence against women in Italy. Since the beginning of 2025, 72 women have been killed in the country. Despite laws toughening penalties for domestic violence, many analysts and critics question whether the government's actions are sufficient. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni denies accusations of neglecting women's rights, asserting her defense of traditional family values. Italy continues to face a gender pay gap and one of the lowest birth rates in Europe.
