
In the evening around 19:00 GMT, black smoke began rising from the chimney of the Sixtin Chapel. Firefighters were on the scene and began to investigate what was happening.
Witnesses reported that thick smoke started to emerge from the chimney and began to spread across the rainy skies of Rome. At the time of the incident, there were no visitors inside the chapel as it was closed to the public.
