Italy and Spain announced on Monday that they are not ready to open their borders for tourists from other countries. This decision was made due to the rise in COVID-19 cases in many countries.
"Opening borders for tourists now is still premature. This may lead to an increased risk of infection and an abnormal rise in coronavirus cases," stated Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza.
According to Spanish authorities, this measure is necessary to prevent new outbreaks of infection. "Spain is not rushing to open borders for tourists. We must ensure the safety of our citizens and avoid the possibility of an increase in cases," emphasized Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa.
These decisions are framed during a period when a number of countries began to lift restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, Italy and Spain continue to monitor the epidemiological situation and assess the possibility of reopening borders in the future.
