Michelangelo Bovero, political philosopher and leader of the Turin School, emphasized the importance of avoiding the concentration of power in few hands, as this limits the freedom of society as a whole. In his book "Contro il governo dei peggiori" he warned about the danger of kakistocracy, or government by the worst, which affected his country and Western democracies.
Bovero pointed out that the combination of economic, ideological, and political power in a single person or group was extremely harmful. He highlighted that the means used to impose oneself was crucial, thus differentiating political power (threat or violence), economic (material resources), and ideological (control of ideas).
The Italian thinker warned about the threat posed by the concentration of these powers in the hands of figures like Berlusconi in Italy, noting that this situation endangered democracies. His analysis was based on the Weberian idea that the greater the concentration of power by one subject, the lesser the freedom for others.
Bovero warned about the grave situation represented by the amalgamation of powers in the hands of leaders like Berlusconi, and cautioned that the Trump-Musk duo and their followers constituted a serious threat to democratic freedoms worldwide.
In a scenario where power is concentrated in few hands, there is a risk of falling into absolutism, as illustrated by the case of Berlusconi in Italy. Bovero stressed the importance of maintaining a balance among different powers to preserve individual liberties and democracy.
In light of Bovero's warnings and the current situation, there is a need to avoid excessive concentration of power in the hands of a few, in order to guarantee the freedom and well-being of society as a whole.
