Rome, Reuters — Rescue officials and charities involved in migrant rescue confirmed on Wednesday that the Italian Coast Guard recovered the bodies of 19 migrants and rescued 58 survivors from a boat that broke down while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe from Libya.A spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration and Doctors Without Borders suggested that some of the victims—18 men and one woman—died due to hypothermia.The survivors, including five children, were taken to the island of Lampedusa.
