In Italian football, there is a noticeable decline in competitiveness in the European arena, which raises numerous questions about the causes of such developments. Most indicators point to the loss of accountability in the Italian league, as in recent years the clubs in the Italian league have been among the best in Europe. However, recent statistical research has revealed that Italian clubs now occupy the fifth place in the ranking of clubs across Europe. At the same time, English clubs maintain leading positions in three European tournaments, confirming the fact of the decline of Italian clubs on the European arena. Moreover, all this is happening at a time when UEFA is adopting decisions on the new structure of the Champions League and the Europa League, which means that it is becoming even more difficult for Italian clubs to remain among the best.
"The situation really requires serious analysis to understand the core of the problems and develop a strategy to improve the position of Italian football in Europe," stated Mohammed Ben Tualib Al-Dari, president of the Italian Football Federation. "We must adopt additional measures to develop our football and prepare young players to return to our glorious days and restore the prestige of Italian football in the European arena."
Prior to this, serious work had begun on identifying factors that led to the decline in competitiveness of Italian clubs. While the league is still addressing issues of changes that need to be introduced for returning to leading positions in European football.
