Pope Francis is in a delicate state of health, according to Archbishop of Seville, Monsignor José Ángel Saiz Meneses. At 88 years old, the pontiff has been struggling with bronchitis that has complicated into bilateral pneumonia. During his stay at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, the Pope has received communion and alternated rest with moments of prayer, reading, and work.
Archbishop Saiz Meneses raised the possibility that Pope Francis may resign from his ministry due to his fragile health, following the example of Benedict XVI. He expressed concern about the Pope's ability to fulfill his duties and highlighted the importance of a pontiff being able to resign if he cannot adequately carry out his mission.
In an interview on Canal Sur Radio, the archbishop mentioned that current longevity and medical advancements extend life, but the physical stamina required to be Pope is vital. The faithful have been asked to raise prayers for Francis's swift recovery, and it has been reported that planned activities in his schedule have been suspended due to his health condition.
