Filipino ultramarathoner Genesis Kunaan, a 35-year-old resident of Piyachenza, Italy, changed his life after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, turning it into a source of motivation for ongoing training and achieving victories. After moving to Italy at the age of six, he was raised by his grandfather and grandmother, as his parents worked to ensure a better future for the family.
Inspired by his family, Genesis dedicates his sport to the main source of income about his physical and mental health. Every day he feels their support in continuing training and participating in competitions. "They inspire me every day to keep moving forward," the athlete admits.
Genesis initially engaged in cycling, participating in road races to improve his health. But soon he opened up running for himself, which drastically changed his life. As his passion for running grew, he became a successful ultramarathon participant, claiming podium places in various competitions.
Among his bright achievements - third place at the Ultra Turchino 50K 2024, third place at the Vinya Trail 2024, third place at the Scarpa Trail 23K 2024, and also second place at 100 km Chinizzello Balsamo 2024. Besides his athletic achievements, for him, it's important to combine training with work and family life. For example, working in a warehouse, he trains three times a week after long working days.
Genesis is looking forward to a new serious test – participation in the race at 202 kilometers with an elevation gain of 3800 meters "Nove Colli" May 11-12, 2025. Training for the race gives him a sense of balance and internal equilibrium. He acknowledges that his passion for movement not only makes him feel better but also reduces his dependence on medications.
